How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on NeatUpgrade starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our space heater guides, that means your room size, your running costs and what the maker's manual says.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your room and the manual

A heater that suits a small bedroom can fall short in a large living room. We start with room size, then check the watts and the heater type, like an oil-filled radiator or a ceramic tower.

The room size a maker lists is the maker's claim, not an independent test, so we label it that way. We also point you to the maker's manual for placement, cords and power.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at watts, thermostat and timer controls, remotes, fan noise the maker lists, cord length, weight and wheels. When a maker lists tip-over or overheat protection, we report it as the maker's feature.

We also note the warranty terms the maker lists. When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a heater. We look for patterns, like uneven heat, rattling or clicking, thermostats that cycle too often or units that stop working early.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one buyer may score lower in a guide written for another.

For running cost, we show the formula (watts times hours times your electric rate) and one example, not a promised saving.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Heater lines get new model codes, so we check each model name and code before we write about it, and we suggest you check the maker's recall notices before you buy.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every heater we cover.

Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. For placement, cords, outlets and when to turn a heater off, follow the maker's steps.

We don't promise that any heater is safe to leave on or safe around kids or pets. We make no health promises about heat or dry air.
